Don’t forget to visit the basement where the hidden treasures continue with vintage goods, artistic works, and hand-sewn items. Market 41 is the place to go to support local artisan crafters and small business owners.

My friends and family have raved about Downtown Threadz so I had to check it out the last time I was in town. I was surprised at the selection of apparel. There was something for every age group.

You will find trendy jeans in a variety of cuts, casual tops, and a nice selection of dresses. In addition to apparel, the shop sells jewelry and accessories to complete the outfit.

This is a fantastic place to buy a gift for a friend or just pick something up for yourself.

North Woods General Store

The items are so cute. I actually had to talk myself out of buying a gift since I don’t know anyone expecting a child at the moment. When I do, I’ll definitely be back.

It’s easy to miss this little park right downtown Newaygo. This is a hidden piece of nature installed to remember State Police Trooper Kevin Marshall who was killed in the line of duty.

You will find a memorial statue surrounded by a garden at the entry of the park. Follow the natural trail along Brooks Creek through the woods for a short walk where you will find a lookout deck and pavilion where you can sit and enjoy the views and sounds of nature.

4. Newaygo Farmers Market at Brooks Park

Brooks Park – 28 North State Road, Newaygo MI
Google Maps | Facebook

If you’re passing through town on a Friday afternoon, you’ll want to stop by the Newaygo Farmers Market. Here you will find a great selection of homegrown fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses.

For all of you with a sweet tooth, you may be lucky to find sweetbreads, cupcakes, and donuts. You may even find local goods like customized apparel, homemade soaps, and floral arrangements.

Mark your calendars for Fridays from 2-6 throughout the growing season to find the best locally grown items in the area. Come hungry as there are often food trucks available and you’ll find several restaurants within walking distance.

5. Tubing, Canoeing, and Kayaking the Muskegon River

Pack up a few snacks and some drinks and spend the day on the river. This is one of my favorite things to do in Newaygo when the weather is nice.

The Muskegon River is a nice wide river with a good current making it a great river to go tubing down. Tubing is very relaxing and there’s little skill needed. Just jump in the tube and let the current carry you down the river.

Kayaking with my dog Zeke down the Muskegon River

If you prefer not to sit in the water and want to paddle down the river, a kayak or canoe is a good choice. While there is a little skill needed to paddle straight and maneuver through the waters, it’s something that is quickly learned for most people.

Do you want to travel down the river, but don’t have a tube, kayak, or canoe? Don’t know where to start your river excursion? No worries! There are places to rent watercraft. They can even transport you to the drop-off locations.

Before you go down the river, make a plan to have a vehicle spotted or a pickup arranged at your destination point.

6. Visit the Heritage Museum of Newaygo County

12 Quarterline St, Newaygo MI
Google Maps | 231-652-5003 | Website

Growing up in Newaygo County, I’ve heard a lot of stories about the area from my grandparents and school teachers. Knowing how the land has developed and the people have evolved has always been fascinating. We shouldn’t only look to the future, but learn from our past.

Visit the Heritage Museum of Newaygo County which can be found on the corner of Quarterline St. & State St. in downtown Newaygo. The museum is supported by individual, business, and foundation donations along with grants.

Stop in and learn about Newaygo County and check out the local preserved artifacts. It’s always good to slow down and learn a little bit about the past.

7. Picnic at a Park in Newaygo

One of my favorite things to do for date night is a low-key trip to the park along the river. Throw some food into a basket, grab some drinks, and enjoy the serene views along the river.

If you don’t find a picnic at the park to be your type of date night, it’s a great place to take the kids. Many of the parks in Newaygo have playgrounds so your little ones can work off some energy.

I list a few favorites near downtown Newaygo but check out this list for more area parks.

River Front Park

105 River Street, Newaygo MI
Google Maps

This is my go-to spot for a picnic. It’s located in downtown Newaygo. There is plenty of paved parking and large grassy areas for the kids to play or to have a picnic on the ground. You will also find a playground at the park.

River Front Park Playground

It typically isn’t too busy in the park, but when it is you still be able to find an open place where you’re not crowded by others.

When it comes to eating, you will find charcoal grills (don’t forget to bring charcoal and lighter fluid) and picnic tables. The nice thing is, if you have any inclement weather, there is a shelter with picnic tables so the rain doesn’t have to completely ruin the day.

After the picnic, take a walk along the paved path that runs along the Muskegon River. There are also several benches and viewing areas where you can sit and enjoy the view.

Riverside Park

85 E Water St, Newaygo MI
Google Maps

This park is right alongside the river in downtown Newaygo. There is paved parking and some grass around the play area. There aren’t many benches or picnic tables. Bring your own chair or a blanket if you choose to visit this park.

Truss railroad bridge view from Riverside Park

There is a paved path that runs from Riverside to River Front Park along the Muskegon River. It’s also a place to get an amazing view of a historic truss railroad bridge.

If you choose to visit this park, beware of busy times. This park is located at a prime spot for kayakers and tubers to get off the river.

There are a lot of river floaters parking in this lot so it can get congested. If you are visiting on the weekends on warm weather days, it’s best to avoid this park.

The great thing about disc golf is it’s not expensive to get into. Grab a small cooler and a few discs and you’re ready to go. You can purchase discs online.

A lot of times, you can find them at a local sporting goods store or even at a convenience store. Here’s a great starter disc golf set online.

Unlike regular golf which can get expensive to continually play, disc golf is typically a free sport. You just have the cost of the discs. When you like the game and become a more serious player, you can add to your disc collection.

If you haven’t been disc golfing before or want to learn a little more about it before you go, check out this beginner’s guide on keeping score, etiquette, throwing, and much more from discgolfnow.com.

10. Visit a Coffee Shop in Newaygo

Wherever I go, I love to find a good coffee shop to grab a good cup of Joe while I share my outings with you. Newaygo didn’t disappoint with its coffee offerings. I found two fantastic coffee shops on this last visit.

The River Stop Cafe

52 State Road, Newaygo MI
Google Maps | 231-652-5282 | Website

I have to admit, I’ve been frequently stopping into The River Stop Cafe for over 20 years. I began ordering specialty coffees when they had their small coffee house across the street.

They have since upgraded into a trendy downtown location on the east side of M-37. It’s a pretty cool setting to enjoy my coffee and grab a bite to eat.

Did I mention they serve some tasty dishes and they have a full bar as well?

Timbertown Coffee Co.

41 W State Road, Newaygo MI
Google Maps | 231-245-7531 | Website

I was excited to find this place. It’s a little hidden so I never realized it was there until I recently went shopping downtown. It’s a little coffee shop you will find placed behind Market 41.

Timbertown slowly roasts its own coffee in small batches to get the best flavor experience. I have to say I love the bold flavor of the coffee.

Timbertown Coffee Co. – Downtown Newaygo

The atmosphere is cozy with its exposed brick and modern country vibe. They not only offer coffee but some cute gifts as well. I couldn’t resist picking up a few items.

Next time you’re in Newaygo and looking for a coffee or espresso drink, support this local coffee bean roster. This is going to be one of my regular stops.

11. Grab a Bite to Eat in Newaygo

Whether you’re in the area for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the restaurants in Newaygo will not disappoint. You’ll find sandwiches, wraps, and salads for a lighter meal or wood-fired pizzas, fish, and burritos for a more hearty meal.

Newaygo Brewing Company

19 State Road, Newaygo MI

This is my go-to stop when I’m in Downtown Newaygo. This microbrewery offers many different ales. You’re sure to find a beer you’re going to love whether you’re a light beer drinker or you love sour ales, stouts, or hoppy ales.

Not a beer drinker? No worries, they also offer Newaygo Wines and several non-alcoholic beverages as well.

When it comes to food, I love wood-fired pizzas. You can choose from one of their specialty pizzas including the Reuben, crab rangoon, pulled pork, or Mediterranean pizza, or build your own.

What you’ll find:

  • Salads
  • Sandwiches
  • Wood-fired pizzas
  • Main dishes

12. Fishing on the Muskegon River

If you want to fish and you don’t have experience, the best thing to do is hire a guide service. These are local guides that know the ins and outs of the river.

From understanding the right gear, line, and methods to knowing the season, migratory patterns, and best river spots, a knowledgeable guide is going to help you be successful.

IMPORTANT INFO YOU SHOULD KNOW: You’ll run into a large number of people floating or paddling down the river on a hot summer weekend.
